I omitted Home of Hope's website, www.hohinc.org, when I originally posted this. That has been corrected; I would advise contacting them directly if you wish to offer your assistance.

Thanks to Home of Hope ! I am deeply touched at its Charity and interest in helping children in India. The anecdotal evidence is quite satisfying. A lot more is needed in the other parts of the country. Wish to know what are the other projects it is taking for India and if there is any thing we as individuals can do about it.
I am a Children's librarian, but not living in India at the moment.

Best Wishes !

I very much agree with this idea but carrying it out may pose a challenge. I am interested in the use of mobile to deliver some library services especially Notifications of date dues, new books and new online resources.

As a University Librarian, the application of cell phone for library services has in the last one year occupied my thought. From a developing country perspective, I believe the technolgy of cell phones to be used for library services will need to have some technical features that are compatible with mobile information delivery. Secondly network operators must be willing to cooperate in this direction just as much as libraries will have to embark on re-packaging of information. I think it will be nice to start with quick reference information services while adopting incremental approach. In other words start with refrence services and gradually get to offering full text services. I see a lot of potential advantages in the use of mobile phones.

Oh, but Samantha and Jeanie, have you read the contract between ALA and the Hyatt? Do you know what state the agreement between the Eastern Sociological Society and the Hyatt was in before the ESS decided to change the venue? You need to trust your Association leaders here (and I am just an ALA member, not on Council, etc.,) before castigating them. ALA cannot afford a lawsuit at this time.

Also, I'd be interested in the evidence backing up the claim that "a very large percentage of the ALA's membership is unionized." I sincerely question that, but will gladly stand corrected if the claim can be proved.

I'd like to not get American Libraries as a print publication. That would save costs. I never read the print publication anyway, and have to recycle it when it comes every month. The membership is too expensive, and it goes up once the librarian declares him or herself as a professional. Salaries, however, don't go up. The cost of the conference is too expensive for most of us to attend more than infrequently, as the conferences are always held in very expensive cities.

Once the librarian has joined ALA then there are the professional divisions which I think are worth becoming a part of. I wouldn't rejoin ALA if it weren't for joining my division, i.e. more money. I generally can't afford to join at the exact time my membership is due. There is a disconnect between ALA and the rank and file regarding what we who work in the field actually make.

I agree completely with Jeanie. I've never heard such an absurd excuse for not honoring a boycott. Utter nonsense. ALA is a private organization and can decide to take its business to whatever company it chooses for whatever reason. Considering that a very large percentage of the ALA's membership is unionized, it is not unreasonable for the ALA to respect UNITE!'s request or at least treat it with some consideration and respect. Characterizing UNITE!'s correspondence with the ALA as a "blast" is revealing of an anti-union streak that is both shocking and deeply disturbing.

I don't buy it. If "professional groups such as the Eastern Sociological Society" are allowed by law to do "the right thing" by moving a "large event to another hotel," then I'm sure the leadership of ALA can work it out. Don't hide behind the excuse of a "decision ... informed by law." That's just LAME. Jeanie Straub
